Overview

Lucca is one of Tuscany’s most charming cities, famous for its Renaissance walls, medieval towers, Romanesque churches and peaceful atmosphere. From Piazza dell’Anfiteatro to the Guinigi Tower, from hidden gardens to quiet cobblestone streets, every corner of Lucca offers history, beauty and local traditions.

These are the things I always look for when I travel, and you will find all of them in this digital guide, created together with a local to help you enjoy your own Lucca walking tour at your own pace.

Over the years, I have guided thousands of travelers across Italy, and I created this guide so you can explore Lucca as if you were walking with a friend who knows every hidden alley, legend, viewpoint and traditional dish.

During the tour, you will walk along the famous Renaissance walls, explore the oval-shaped Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, discover the Guinigi Tower with its rooftop garden, visit the Duomo of San Martino, and learn stories connected to Lucca’s Roman, medieval and Renaissance past.

You will also find suggestions on where to taste local specialties such as tortelli lucchesi, farro soup, buccellato and wines from the surrounding hills.

This self-guided audio tour combines history, culture, food and curiosities, giving you the perfect one-day itinerary to discover the authentic Lucca.

Itinerary

1) Porta San Pietro
We begin our Lucca walking tour at Porta San Pietro, the majestic southern gate of the Renaissance walls. Built in 1566 on the ancient road to Pisa, this impressive entrance immediately sets the mood for the city’s historical charm.
Admission: free

2) Piazza Napoleone
Locals often call it “Piazza Grande,” and for good reason — it has always been the political heart of Lucca! Today it hosts concerts, events and the famous Lucca Summer Festival. A lively square where history and modern life mix perfectly.
Admission: free

3) San Martino Cathedral (Duomo)
One glance and you’ll notice something curious: the façade is asymmetrical! One arch is smaller due to the pre-existing bell tower. Outside we’ll talk about its history and artworks — including pieces by Tintoretto, Ghirlandaio and Bartolomeo. You’re free to visit inside if you like!
Admission: not included

4) Torre delle Ore
Lucca isn’t just the “city of 100 churches” — during medieval times, noble families also built dozens of towers as symbols of power. Torre delle Ore is one of the most iconic. Every extra meter meant extra prestige! A perfect stop to imagine the city’s medieval skyline.
Admission: not included

5) San Michele in Foro
Located on the old Roman Forum, this church dates back to the 8th century and is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. On top stands a stunning 4-meter statue of the archangel defeating the dragon. Legend says an emerald was once set in the statue and still reflects a mysterious glow on sunny days… but nobody has ever found it!
Admission: free

6) Guinigi Tower
One of Lucca’s most recognizable symbols! This 45-meter medieval tower stands out thanks to the holm oak trees planted right on its rooftop. Yes — a garden in the sky! After climbing 230 steps (you can do it!) you’ll enjoy one of the best views in all of Lucca.
Ticket: €8

7) Piazza Anfiteatro
This unique square has an unmistakable elliptical shape, accessible through four vaulted entrances. Beneath your feet lie the foundations of a Roman amphitheater from the 2nd century AD, once used for gladiator games. History and architecture blend beautifully here!
Admission: free

8) Basilica di San Frediano
One of Lucca’s oldest churches, founded (according to tradition) by Saint Frediano himself — an Irish prince who became a hermit on Mount Pisano before serving as bishop of Lucca in the 6th century. The basilica is mentioned for the first time in 685 as the “basilica Longobardorum.”
Ticket: €3

9) Local Food & Restaurant Tips in Lucca
Lucca’s food scene is warm, rustic and delicious! Don’t miss traditional dishes like tordelli lucchesi, farro soup, rovelline and buccellato. Whether you prefer a cosy trattoria, a family-run osteria or a spot under the historic porticoes, you’ll find great places to eat like a real local.
