Milan is a city of art, fashion, design and surprising history, where modern skyscrapers stand beside ancient churches, hidden courtyards and lively neighborhoods. From the Duomo to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, from Brera to the Navigli, every area has its own character and stories to discover.

These are the things I always look for when I travel, and you will find all of them in this digital guide, created together with a local to help you enjoy your own Milan walking tour at your own pace.

Over the years, I have guided thousands of travelers across Italy, and I created this guide so you can explore Milan’s historic center as if you were walking with a friend who knows every hidden corner, legend, viewpoint and traditional dish.

During the tour, you will discover the stories behind the Duomo, walk through the elegant Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, explore the artistic district of Brera, learn about the history of Castello Sforzesco, and enjoy the atmosphere of the Navigli with their canals, bridges and cafés.

Itinerary

1) Castello Sforzesco
Welcome to one of Milan’s most iconic landmarks! Castello Sforzesco is a massive fortress right in the heart of the city and has witnessed centuries of battles, art, power, and royal drama. It’s one of those places that immediately makes you feel Milan’s history—impressive, elegant, and full of stories.

2) Santa Maria delle Grazie
Here we are in front of one of Milan’s most beautiful churches, a perfect mix of Gothic and Renaissance style. And yes… this is where Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper! It’s preserved inside the old refectory, and you’ll need to book well in advance to see it—but trust me, it’s absolutely worth it.

3) Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio
Dedicated to Milan’s patron saint, this basilica is one of the most important Romanesque churches in the world. Stepping inside feels like traveling back in time, and it’s a fantastic place to understand Milan’s ancient roots (plus, it’s wonderfully peaceful).

4) San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore
Often called the “Sistine Chapel of Milan,” this church is a real hidden gem. Its incredible frescoes—many inspired by Leonardo’s circle—cover almost every wall. It’s not as famous as the Duomo, but everyone who visits falls instantly in love with it.

5) Duomo di Milano
And here it is: the superstar of Milan! The Duomo is enormous, magnificent, and impossible not to admire. Construction started in 1386 and continued for centuries, resulting in one of the most impressive Gothic cathedrals in Europe. Get ready… there’s a lot to discover about this marble wonder.

6) San Bernardino alle Ossa
One of the most unusual places in Milan! Just a few minutes from the Duomo, this small church has an ossuary decorated with real human bones. It’s definitely not for the faint-hearted, but if you’re curious and not too easily scared, it’s a fascinating stop that most tourists miss.

7) Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
This is Milan’s most elegant passage—basically the city’s luxury living room. It’s also the oldest active shopping gallery in Italy! Stroll through the glass vaults, admire the mosaics, and maybe spin on the bull mosaic for good luck (yes, it’s a thing).

8) Piazza della Scala
Our final stop brings us to this beautiful square right in front of the world-famous Teatro alla Scala. It’s connected to the Duomo via the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and is the perfect place to relax, enjoy the architecture, and feel Milan’s classy atmosphere.
