Overview

Udine is a quiet yet elegant city in the heart of Friuli, known for its Venetian-style squares, medieval streets, beautiful viewpoints and masterpieces by the painter Tiepolo. With its relaxed atmosphere and strong local identity, Udine is the perfect destination for a cultural and food-focused walk.

These are the things I always look for when I travel, and you will find all of them in this digital guide, created together with a local to help you enjoy your own Udine walking tour at your own pace.

Over the years, I have guided thousands of travelers across Italy, and I created this guide so you can explore Udine as if you were walking with a friend who knows every viewpoint, legend, alley and traditional dish.

During the tour, you will explore the historic Piazza Libertà with its Venetian architecture, visit the Loggia del Lionello, walk up to the Castle of Udine for panoramic views, discover the Duomo and its artworks, and continue through picturesque streets such as Via Mercatovecchio. You will also learn stories connected to Tiepolo, medieval Udine and the region’s unique identity between Italy, Austria and Slovenia.

You will also find suggestions on where to enjoy Friulian specialties such as frico, jota, prosciutto di San Daniele, cjarsons, local cheeses and excellent wines like Friulano, Refosco and Ribolla Gialla.

This self-guided audio tour combines history, architecture, food and local traditions, giving you the perfect one-day itinerary to discover the authentic Udine.

Itinerary

1) Cattedrale di Udine
The Cathedral of Udine dates back to 1236, built on the site of an earlier church dedicated to Saint Jerome. Over the centuries, it has been enriched with artworks, chapels, and fascinating stories. A beautiful place to begin exploring the city’s past!

2) Valvason Morpurgo Palace (Pass By)
As we walk through the historic center, we pass the elegant Valvason Morpurgo Palace — an important example of Udine’s refined architecture.

3) Casa Cavazzini (Pass By)
We also pass by Casa Cavazzini, now home to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, an artistic hub that hosts exhibitions and cultural events.

4) Piazza della Libertà
Liberty Square is the oldest square in Udine and one of the city’s most iconic spots! Often called “the most beautiful Venetian square on the mainland,” it features Renaissance loggias, elegant buildings and plenty of stories linked to the city’s past. A lively and picturesque stop!

5) Castello di Udine (Pass By)
Perched on the hill, Udine Castle dominates the skyline. We will admire it from outside while learning about its long history, myths and the panoramic views it offers over the city.

6) Porta Manin
Also known as Torre di San Bartolomeo or Porta Cividale, this is the oldest surviving city gate. Built between 1273 and 1299, it was part of the medieval walls that protected Udine. A small but meaningful piece of the city’s defensive past.

7) Museo Diocesano e Galleria del Tiepolo (Pass By)
On our way, we pass the Diocesan Museum, famous for its extraordinary frescoes by Giambattista Tiepolo — a jewel of Venetian Baroque art.

8) Piazza I Maggio
One of Udine’s most popular squares, located in the heart of the historic center. Known for its greenery and lively atmosphere, it takes its name from the traditional May 1st celebrations linked to Italian social and workers’ movements. A beautiful open space beloved by locals.

9) Santuario della Beata Vergine delle Grazie
Built in 1500 around a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Ma
