Overview

Assisi is one of the most beautiful and spiritual towns in Italy, famous for its medieval streets, pink stone buildings and the magnificent Basilica of Saint Francis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Surrounded by hills, olive trees and breathtaking views, Assisi offers a unique combination of history, art and peaceful atmosphere.

These are the things I always look for when I travel, and you will find all of them in this digital guide, created together with a local to help you enjoy your own Assisi walking tour at your own pace.

Over the years, I have guided thousands of travelers across Italy, and I created this guide so you can explore Assisi as if you were walking with a friend who knows every viewpoint, legend, alley and traditional dish.

During the tour, you will visit the Upper and Lower Basilicas of Saint Francis, explore medieval streets filled with history, walk to Piazza del Comune, discover the Cathedral of San Rufino and the Basilica of Santa Chiara, and admire views toward the Umbrian valley. You will also learn stories connected to Saint Francis, Saint Clare and the origins of the Franciscan movement.

You will find tips on how to reach the Rocca Maggiore for one of the best panoramas in Umbria, and optional suggestions for visiting the peaceful Eremo delle Carceri, located just outside the town.

You will also find suggestions on where to enjoy Umbrian specialties such as truffle dishes, torta al testo, porchetta, cheeses, cured meats and local wines.

This self-guided audio tour combines spirituality, art, food and scenic views, giving you the perfect one-day itinerary to discover the authentic Assisi.

Itinerary

1) Basilica di Santa Chiara
The Basilica of Santa Chiara stands on the hill opposite the Basilica of San Francesco. Their façades, inspired by the Romanesque model, seem to “speak” to each other through their simplicity. Both feature a triangular tympanum and a central rose window — a symbolic embrace welcoming pilgrims walking through Assisi.

2) Chiesa Nuova
This sanctuary stands on the spot traditionally identified as the birthplace of Saint Francis. In 1615, thanks to the financial support of King Philip III of Spain, the Friars Minor transformed the site into a church, beginning community life and liturgical celebrations here.

3) Rocca Maggiore
The great fortress of Assisi is composed of two main structures: the Rocca Maggiore and the Rocca Minore (also called Cassero di Sant’Antonio). Built with the characteristic pink stone of Assisi, it has dominated the city and the valley below for centuries.

4) Piazza del Comune
All the main streets leading from the ancient city gates converge here. The square sits above the ancient Roman Forum, once the center of political and social life in Roman Asisium. During the Middle Ages, major buildings rose here, including the Temple of Minerva, the first Town Hall, the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the Torre del Popolo.

5) Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo
Built at the end of the 13th century, this palace served as the seat of the Capitano del Popolo — the city official responsible for maintaining order and administering justice. A key figure in Assisi’s medieval political life.

6) Roman Forum and Archaeological Museum
Located beneath today’s Piazza del Comune, the ancient Roman Forum of Asisium was uncovered thanks to 19th-century excavations. You can access the archaeological area through the crypt of the former Church of San Niccolò in Via Portica.

7) Oratorio dei Pellegrini
Built in 1457 by the Brotherhood of Sant’Antonio Abate and San Giacomo, this small oratory allowed the pilgrims staying in the nearby hospital to participate in religious services. The interior, with its cross vault and frescoed walls, preserves an intimate medieval atmosphere.

8) Basilica Superiore di San Francesco
After Saint Francis died in 1226, work began immediately on a basilica to honor him. On July 15, 1228 — the very day Francis was declared a saint — Pope Gregory IX laid the first stone. Built on a hill at the edge of Assisi, the basilica became one of the most important spiritual sites in Europe. Let’s discover its beauty and incredible history!

9) Local Food & Restaurant Tips in Assisi
Umbrian cuisine is simple, earthy and full of flavour — perfect after a day exploring the city! Don’t miss:
Strangozzi with truffles
Umbricelli pasta
Porchetta
– Local cheeses and cured meats
Torta al testo (traditional flatbread)
– Local wines from the hills around Assisi

From rustic trattorias to wine bars loved by locals, Assisi offers plenty of delicious options to enjoy real Umbrian food.
