1) Porta Rudiae
We start our Lecce adventure at Porta Rudiae, one of the city’s oldest gateways. The current Baroque structure, built in 1703, is the result of Prospero Lubelli’s reconstruction. A grand and elegant welcome to the “Florence of the South”!
2) Piazza del Duomo
Once known as the “Courtyard of the Bishop’s Palace,” this square was historically reserved for the clergy — completely closed off from the rest of the city. Today it’s one of the most scenic corners of Lecce, surrounded by stunning Baroque buildings.
3) Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta & Sant’Oronzo
Lecce’s cathedral is the heart of the city’s religious life. Rebuilt in 1659 after the original church was demolished, it features beautiful Baroque details and a fascinating history linked to its patron saints. A must-see for architecture lovers!
4) Bell Tower of Lecce (Campanile del Duomo) – Pass By
Standing over 70 meters tall, this impressive bell tower is decorated with balustrades, vases, pyramids and intricate Baroque designs. From the top, you can enjoy an incredible panoramic view of the Salento — definitely worth admiring from below!
5) Roman Theatre
Hidden among the city’s streets, the Roman Theatre is one of the most important traces of ancient Lupiae. Built in the early 1st century AD under Emperor Octavian Augustus, it was part of Lecce’s vibrant entertainment district during the Roman Empire.
6) Roman Amphitheatre – Pass By
Dating back to the same period as the theatre, the amphitheatre once hosted up to 20,000 spectators. Today only part of it is visible, but it remains one of Lecce’s most iconic archaeological landmarks — and a perfect spot for imagining Roman spectacles!
7) Piazza Sant’Oronzo
This lively square is the true heart of Lecce — a mix of art, history and everyday life. Located right above the ancient Roman city of Lupiae, it’s the place where Lecce’s past and present blend beautifully.
8) Basilica of Santa Croce – Pass By
A masterpiece of Lecce Baroque! Built from 1549 by the Celestine Fathers, Santa Croce is known for its richly decorated façade and extraordinary sculptural details. Even just walking by, it’s impossible not to be amazed.
9) Castle of Charles V
The largest castle in Puglia! Originally built in the 12th century, it was reconstructed in 1539 by order of Emperor Charles V to enhance Lecce’s defenses against possible invasions. Massive, historic and full of stories — a perfect way to end the tour.
10) Local Food & Restaurant Tips in Lecce
Lecce’s cuisine is a dream for food lovers! Try ciceri e tria, frisella, rustico leccese, pasticciotto and amazing local wines like Negroamaro and Primitivo. Whether you’re heading to a traditional trattoria or a modern osteria, Lecce offers incredible dishes loved by locals.
