Matera is one of the most unique and ancient cities in Europe, famous for the Sassi districts, cave dwellings, rupestrian churches and breathtaking viewpoints. Walking through Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano feels like stepping into a living museum, surrounded by stone houses, narrow alleys and centuries of stories.
These are the things I always look for when I travel, and you will find all of them in this digital guide, created together with a local to help you enjoy your own Matera walking tour at your own pace.
Over the years, I have guided thousands of travelers across Italy, and I created this guide so you can explore Matera as if you were walking with a friend who knows every hidden staircase, cave, viewpoint, legend and traditional dish.
During the tour, you will explore the Sassi, walk through panoramic paths overlooking the Murgia Park, learn about the ancient cave churches, discover film locations from movies such as The Passion and 007 No Time to Die, and understand how Matera transformed from poverty to a UNESCO World Heritage site and European Capital of Culture.
You will also find suggestions on where to taste local products such as pane di Matera, orecchiette, cialledda, pecorino cheese and wines from the Basilicata region.
This self-guided audio tour combines history, culture, food and curiosities, giving you the perfect one-day itinerary to discover the authentic Matera.

1) Ipogeo Materasum
Let’s start underground! The Materasum Ipogeo is a fascinating network of subterranean rooms and tunnels right beneath the historic center. It’s a great introduction to Matera’s long tradition of cave dwellings and hidden spaces.
2) Palazzo dell’Annunziata
This elegant 18th-century building dominates Piazza Vittorio Veneto and once served as a convent. Today it’s one of Matera’s cultural hubs, home to the provincial library and several exhibitions. A beautiful spot right in the heart of the city.
3) Palombaro Lungo
Time to explore one of the city’s coolest secrets! The Palombaro Lungo is a massive underground cistern carved below Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Built from the 16th century onward, it stored water for the entire town. Walking through it feels like entering a silent, hidden world.
4) Sassi di Matera
Here we are in the city’s most famous landmark! The Sassi are the ancient districts of Matera, divided into Sasso Barisano, Sasso Caveoso, and the Civita. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a spectacular maze of cave houses, narrow alleys, viewpoints, and centuries of history carved into the rock.
5) Matera Cathedral (Cattedrale di Matera)
Standing proudly on the Civita—the highest point of the city—the cathedral was completed in 1270. Its elegant Romanesque style and panoramic views make it one of the most impressive stops in Matera.
You will also pass by Casa Noha.
6) Church of Santa Maria de Idris
Perched dramatically on the Monterrone rock, this church is partly carved into the mountain and partly built after a vault collapse before the 16th century. Its position in Sasso Caveoso makes it one of the most scenic rock churches in Matera.
7) Church of San Pietro Caveoso
Located in the heart of Sasso Caveoso, this church rises beautifully above the ravine. The Baroque façade features niches with statues of St. Paul, St. Peter, and the Madonna della Misericordia. A peaceful and atmospheric stop with wonderful views.
8) Church of Purgatory (Chiesa del Purgatorio)
A Baroque church dedicated to the souls in purgatory, decorated with symbols of death and resurrection. It’s both artistic and slightly mysterious—a fascinating way to explore another side of the city’s history.
9) Local Food & Best restaurants
No walking tour is complete without tasting some local food! Every city has its own traditional dishes, from savory specialties to delicious desserts. You’ll also find plenty of cozy restaurants, family-run trattorias, and street-food spots where you can try authentic regional flavors. Whether you prefer quick bites or a long, relaxing lunch, there are always great options nearby to enjoy a tasty break during your visit.
